Art Therapy is a human services profession that engages people in the creative process as a way to bring about change, growth, and healing. Art therapists practice in a wide range of settings and with people of all ages and backgrounds--such as hospitals, schools, treatment programs for adolescents, nursing homes, mental health clinics, and juvenile detention centers and prisons.
Coursework for art therapy majors includes courses in art therapy, studio art, and psychology--challenging students to fully cultivate their creative, intellectual, and interpersonal skills and abilities. Small classes, practica, field experiences, team projects, and individual mentoring combine for intensive, hands-on learning throughout the four-year program. Each student is assisted in creating a capstone, senior internship tailored to his or her specific interests.

Students also have opportunities to participate in on-campus workshops by distinguished guest art therapists, the Edgewood College Art Therapy Students (ECATS) professional and social organization, the Wisconsin Art Therapy Association annual symposium, and to assist with faculty research initiatives. Art therapy students form a vibrant, close-knit community who maintain their ties throughout their years at Edgewood and as alumni.
Outlook for Graduates
Our students are actively recruited by graduate art therapy programs from across the country. As in related fields, a Master's Degree is required in order to obtain credentialing and licensure as an art therapist/psychotherapist. Art therapy has been cited as one of the top ten "hot jobs" for 2007. (see www.arttherapy.org)
The Bachelor's Degree can lead to a variety of employment experiences including art specialist and adapted arts. Edgewood graduates have accepted program coordinator positions in Wisconsin, Vermont, California, and Oregon. |
